service: South London Line (SLL) Victoria-London Bridge via Peckham Rye

The South London Line (SLL) is a shuttle service on a U loop from Victoria to London Bridge via Battersea Park, Wandsworth Road, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Queen's Rd Peckham and South Bermondsey. It is a vital part of the rail infrastructure in Zone 2 in Inner South London. It complements the long distance commuter trains into London Bridge, Victoria and Blackfriars and makes additional links between some of the SLL stations and London Bridge and Victoria. The trains to these central London stations take only a short time and so within short times rail users can be on the Tube - one of 6 lines - Victoria, Circle, District, Northern, Bakerloo, and Jubilee. This acts for users therefore as if it is part of the Tube.

But the rail industry does not see this at all. DfT and Network Rail and the train operating companies are interested only in high revenues from long and longer distance commuter trains, and TfL are interested in only their own overground operated services, i.e. the East London Extension to come in 2012. At that point they all want to cut the SLL and reduce our direct services to central London and in the case of Wandsworth Rd, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill cut the direct link to London Bridge and in the case of South Bermondsey and Queens Rd cut the direct link to Victoria, and for Peckham Rye reduce the number of services to those central London stations. TfL will instead substitute 4tph to Clapham Junction and Canada Water on the new ELLX. But the campaign was defeated and the SLL will end on 8th December 2012 after operation since 1866.

London Mayor backs need for more Victoria services

Found in the Archives of February 2012 - this letter from London Mayor Boris Johnson supporting the SRUG claim to regain a full 7 day & evening service to Victoria. Now we have lost the full week service of two tph from London Bridge to Victoria, with the demise of the South London Line in December 2012, we need to remind him and TfL of this, and ask what they will do to make it happen.

This coming Saturday 8th December the South London Line (SLL) service will end. It first started in 1866 and has more or less served us and our predecessors faithfully all that time. This is an invitation to join us for all, or just part, of an extraordinary group journey on this last historic day. One of the joys of being a south Londoner is the pleasure of sailing along the roof tops of inner south London on the historic line connecting directly all our local stations - South Bermondsey, Queen's Rd Peckham, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Clapham High St, Wandsworth Rd, Battersea Park with central London stations London Bridge and Victoria - any journey to central London being 20 minutes or much less. Some of those journeys to central London in future will take two to three times as long and be long and circuitous instead of short and direct, and/or less frequent or partial.

train service changes as the ELL arrives, & the SLL ends

On 9th December the new London Overground arrives, and the day before the South London Line ends. Below is the latest news on these big changes in our local rail services, and some of the implications. Victoria & Blackfriars services imminent changes

There are some important changes coming from 20 May in our local services to Victoria and Blackfriars. The new pocket timetables are now available in the stations. These changes are the consequence of Blackfriars station reopening after a long closure for redevelopment. That closure resulted in our Blackfriars services being diverted to Victoria after 8pm during the week and on Saturdays and Sundays.

Extract from ‘Railways South East’ Winter 1991/2 issue:

 Radial rail routes in Greater London have had an almost universal history of development, though that might have been distinctly patchy in some cases. The history of the comparatively few peripheral services has been much more patchy. The so-called 'Middle', 'Outer' and even 'Super-Outer' Circles via Addison Road (now Olympia) have all disappeared, while the North London Line (now North Woolwich-Richmond) after a long period of running down has taken on a new lease of life in recent years. The story of the South London Line between London Bridge and Victoria reveals even more mixed fortunes since it opened throughout in 1867.
