The South London Line (SLL) is a shuttle service on a U loop from Victoria to London Bridge via Battersea Park, Wandsworth Road, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Queen's Rd Peckham and South Bermondsey. It is a vital part of the rail infrastructure in Zone 2 in Inner South London. It complements the long distance commuter trains into London Bridge, Victoria and Blackfriars and makes additional links between some of the SLL stations and London Bridge and Victoria. The trains to these central London stations take only a short time and so within short times rail users can be on the Tube - one of 6 lines - Victoria, Circle, District, Northern, Bakerloo, and Jubilee. This acts for users therefore as if it is part of the Tube.
But the rail industry does not see this at all. DfT and Network Rail and the train operating companies are interested only in high revenues from long and longer distance commuter trains, and TfL are interested in only their own overground operated services, i.e. the East London Extension to come in 2012. At that point they all want to cut the SLL and reduce our direct services to central London and in the case of Wandsworth Rd, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill cut the direct link to London Bridge and in the case of South Bermondsey and Queens Rd cut the direct link to Victoria, and for Peckham Rye reduce the number of services to those central London stations. TfL will instead substitute 4tph to Clapham Junction and Canada Water on the new ELLX. SRUG joined with others to form the Save the South London Line Campaign. ----- see here for a comparison of TfL’s vision of the future with ours.

"The official launch of the campaign against South London Trainline rail cuts was marked by a rally at Denmark Hill today. The cuts threaten to close the South London line (which runs between Victoria and London Bridge, via Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye) by 2012 which would mean no services from Victoria before 7.30am and after 7.30pm. The impact of these cuts in an area which has no option of a tube line has implications for us all and I was certainly happy to be able to be there to show my support. And I wasn’t the only one… the rally attracted wide-reaching support including NHS workers, local campaigners, commuters and many more. There was also a rare show of cross-party support with Liberals and Conservatives as well as our local Labour MPs Tessa Jowell and Harriet Harman leading the charge. Help us save our vital rail services - letter from SRUG in Southwark News 18 June 2009
We must not lose our trains - letter from SRUG in South London Press 19 June 2009
Both on the theme that the services to London Bridge and Victoria are vital for the commercial success of Peckham town centre through Peckham Rye station.
Letter published in Southwark News 18 June 2009
One of the wonderful things about living in Peckham is that Peckham Rye station is like a Tube station. It is one of the most under-utilised assets in marketing Peckham, as a place to live, to ork and to visit.
It has enough direct trains to central London Tube stations to be like a turn up and go station to the central Tube network. Every 5 to 10 minutes a train arrives that can take the user within 9 to 15 minutes to one of 4 central London stations connecting with six different Tube Lines - Victoria, District, Circle, Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern (both loops).

Death by 1,000 cuts Monday, 01 June 2009
Rod Brown (Letters, May 22) acknowledges that South London is not well served by the Tube.
But he then seems surprised that residents who are thus forced to rely upon infrequent overground rail for their travel, wish to hang on to the limited services that they have.
He then perversely tries to argue that they would be better off if even more of their rail services were scrapped.
What planet is he on?

"... The Committee would appreciate clarification of how information about the withdrawal of the service has been made available. It would be useful if you could provide details of meetings with stakeholders where the issue was discussed, copies of letters to stakeholders and any other material made available to interested parties..."
"... Members of the Transport Committee have expressed cross-party support for the extension to the East London Line. I believe public support for the scheme would be best maintained by the publication of the detail behind your decision that it was a better use of DfT funding than the anticipated Victoria to Bellingham service..."

Don't axe trains
To transport minister Andrew Adonis, South London MPs and London Mayor Boris Johnson:
I have discovered that there has been a secret deal between Transport for London and the Department for Transport to axe the planned Victoria-Bellingham rail service (via Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations).
As someone affected (“‘Backroom deal’ axes rail service”, South London Press, April 28), I urge you most strongly to rescind it and prevent any axeing of the service.
