service: South London Line (SLL) Victoria-London Bridge via Peckham Rye

The South London Line (SLL) is a shuttle service on a U loop from Victoria to London Bridge via Battersea Park, Wandsworth Road, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Queen's Rd Peckham and South Bermondsey. It is a vital part of the rail infrastructure in Zone 2 in Inner South London. It complements the long distance commuter trains into London Bridge, Victoria and Blackfriars and makes additional links between some of the SLL stations and London Bridge and Victoria. The trains to these central London stations take only a short time and so within short times rail users can be on the Tube - one of 6 lines - Victoria, Circle, District, Northern, Bakerloo, and Jubilee. This acts for users therefore as if it is part of the Tube.

But the rail industry does not see this at all. DfT and Network Rail and the train operating companies are interested only in high revenues from long and longer distance commuter trains, and TfL are interested in only their own overground operated services, i.e. the East London Extension to come in 2012. At that point they all want to cut the SLL and reduce our direct services to central London and in the case of Wandsworth Rd, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill cut the direct link to London Bridge and in the case of South Bermondsey and Queens Rd cut the direct link to Victoria, and for Peckham Rye reduce the number of services to those central London stations. TfL will instead substitute 4tph to Clapham Junction and Canada Water on the new ELLX. SRUG joined with others to form the Save the South London Line Campaign. ----- see here for a comparison of TfL’s vision of the future with ours.

But the campaign was defeated and the SLL will end on 8th December 2012 after operation since 1866.

local rail cuts campaign news

Here is some more news about the campaign to save our direct rail services into central London.

CONTINUING CUTS
Our latest flyers spell out the significance of the effect, on each of our local stations, of the continuing cuts. For example, from Peckham Rye the services are being cut in HALF:

  • Last year there were 8 trains an hour from Peckham Rye to London Bridge, now there are 6. In 2012 there will be 4.
  • Victoria services face new cuts. There are 4 an hour now. In 2012 there will be 2 in the day, and 0 in the evening.

Here in our A5 flyer you can see the effect on each of the Southwark stations.

Save Our South London Line campaign

As a result of the shocking news of the secret deal between TfL and DfT to axe the planned Victoria-Bellingham service (via Denmark Hill & Peckham Rye), local rail user groups - Southwark Rail Users’ Group and Clapham Transport Users’ Group - have come together with the major hospitals at Denmark Hill and local elected representatives to form the campaign to Save Our South London Line. The latest decision, like the one to axe the Victoria-Denmark Hill-London Bridge service in 2012, shows the low priority the rail industry gives to our inner south London connections into central London. We have to change that before 2012. First stage is the consultation on the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, and the European elections.  Take action now!

The campaign urges rail users to:

'Backroom deal' axes rail service

Letters received by rail user groups from DfT show TfL reached a secret deal with DfT to axe the planned service between Victoria & Bellingham. This was to replace part of the Victoria to London Bridge service planned to be axed in 2012. Instead £24m from DfT for Victoria-Bellingham service will go to TfL for the East London Line Extension (ELLX2). SRUG said the backroom deal was "disgraceful. They did this without telling anyone. There has been a continuing reduction in our services and TfL doesn't seem to think [inner] South London matters."  Read more...

South London Line (SLL) Victoria - London Bridge via Peckham Rye update

The rail industry still plan to stop the all day and evening 2tph service on the SLL, in 2012. It would cut the direct link between Denmark Hill and London Bridge, the direct link between Queens Rd and Victoria, and reduce the trains to London Bridge from Peckham Rye by two an hour.  A major reason given for cutting the SLL is that there will not be enough terminating platforms space at London Bridge station after the rebuilding which is due to start in 2012. We discovered that it is in fact possible to increase the platform space to accommodate the SLL trains, and had this confirmed by Network Rail at the SRUG meeting.

SRUG Objection to the South London Route Utilisation Strategy

Objection to the South London Route Utilisation Strategy

14 May, 2008

Introduction
The Southwark Rail Users Group represents users of the stations in mid Southwark, who use the services routed through Peckham Rye – in addition to Peckham Rye itself, this is Denmark Hill, Queens Road Peckham, South Bermondsey, East Dulwich and Nunhead. SRUG was established in 2007 as a result of raised awareness about rail planning through the South London RUS consultation.

The proposal that caused most concern was the closure of the direct South London Line (SLL) that loops between London Bridge and Victoria via Peckham Rye. Although there are some welcome improvements in the overall RUS plan, the closure of this service is a serious deterioration for rail users in this part of South East London to which we need to register our formal objection. We question whether adequate information and evidence has been gathered about south London rail usage in this inner part of south London to justify this decision.
