Extending the Bakerloo: on the wishlist only

It has become a much publicised fact that the Bakerloo Line is the only one of London’s Tubes that currently has spare capacity. Given this, it is perhaps no surprise that there has been much talk of its extension.
TfL have confirmed that, as it stands, the best business case would see an extension to Hayes, with one of two routes likely (and almost certainly not Lewisham’s suggested scheme):
1) Hayes via Old Kent and Lewisham
2) Hayes via Peckham and Camberwell Green
TfL Planning Director Michelle Mix, speaking in front of the London Assembly Transport Committee last week, admitted that of these the first option had a far stronger business case due to the inclusion of New Cross.
Despite a strong business case and spare capacity, though, it is financing that once again means that a Bakerloo extension is currently a non-starter.

ELL success after 1st phase extension
Sun, 11/12/2011 - 19:46 — eileenHere is a useful report from London Connections on the success of the ELL since it re-opened in 2010 after the first phase extension. When it closed in 2007 it was operating between Whitechapel and New Cross/New Cross Gate. That year, it carried 9m passengers. Today, the ELL runs from Highbury & Islington in the North down to New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon. It carried 16m passengers in the year up to May 2011 and is on course to carry 38m passengers in 2011/2012. The second phase of the extension to Clapham Junction via Peckham Rye & Denmark Hill will open in December 2012.
Network Rail & TfL support idea of Bakerloo Line extension into SE London
Tue, 04/10/2011 - 02:02 — eileenThe London and South East RUS (Rail Utilisation Strategy) published in July 2011 indicates, in section 8.6 on page 159, that both Network Rail and TfL believe that there is a business case for the extension of the Bakerloo Line into SE London through Southwark. They have also indicated that this is not likely before 2020. But it can take many years to plan major new rail projects so planning needs to continue now. The RUS says:

East London Line (ELL) link to Peckham & Denmark Hill takes shape
Tue, 23/08/2011 - 00:43 — eileenWork is proceeding well to build the short stretch of new line to connect the ELL (East London Line) from Surrey Quays to the line that will run to Clapham Junction via Queens Rd Peckham, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Clapham High St, Wandsworth Rd. Foundations are also being laid in the work for a new Surrey Canal Rd Station to be built later. Radial rail routes in Greater London have had an almost universal history of development, though that might have been distinctly patchy in some cases. The history of the comparatively few peripheral services has been much more patchy. The so-called 'Middle', 'Outer' and even 'Super-Outer' Circles via Addison Road (now Olympia) have all disappeared, while the North London Line (now North Woolwich-Richmond) after a long period of running down has taken on a new lease of life in recent years. The story of the South London Line between London Bridge and Victoria reveals even more mixed fortunes since it opened throughout in 1867.

This email is to give you some information about Southern Rail's proposals to improve the passenger waiting facilities on all four station platforms, and to encourage users to send comments to Southern. The draft plans were displayed at the event they held with us in the ticket hall in June. That was a very lively occasion when there were non stop conversations about the platform proposals and also about the work of Peckham Vision and the Peckham Society on the restoration of the historic parts of the station and how that fits with the vision for transforming that part of Peckham town centre.
